Customs Seize Over ₹21.8 Crore Worth of Hydroponic Cannabis and Foreign Currency at Mumbai Airport

Significant Drug and Currency Seizures at Mumbai Airport

The customs department in Mumbai has reported the seizure of hydroponic cannabis, foreign currency, and gold valued at over ₹21.8 crore at the international airport within a span of four days. This information was disclosed by officials on Saturday.

According to the authorities, the confiscations occurred between September 21 and 24 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) based on intelligence reports.

An official revealed that a passenger arriving from Colombo, Sri Lanka, was apprehended with 2.624 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis concealed in a trolley bag, valued at approximately ₹2.62 crore.

Additionally, another traveler arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, was arrested with 18.4 kilograms of a banned substance worth ₹18.40 crore. Hydroponic cannabis refers to cannabis cultivated in nutrient-rich water instead of soil using hydroponic techniques.

Customs officials also detained three passengers carrying undeclared foreign currency. One traveler heading to Dubai was found with ₹7.11 lakh in undeclared currency, while another passenger on the same flight had ₹49.38 lakh.

Furthermore, a passenger traveling to Jakarta, Indonesia, was caught with foreign currency equivalent to ₹19.17 lakh. Officials also discovered a packet containing 365 grams of gold powder, valued at ₹38.10 lakh, in a restroom near the immigration counter, which was seized under customs regulations.
